Ronny Chieng

and comedian. Chieng is currently a senior reporter on The Daily Show on Comedy
Central and creator and star of the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student
which premiered on ABC (Australia) as well as Comedy Central Asia in 2017.
Chieng was the son of a Malaysian Chinese family. He was born in Johor Bahru.
Chieng was raised in Singapore and in the United States, living in Manchester, New
Hampshire from 1989 to 1994. Chieng was a performer at a comedy festival held
in Melbourne, Australia in 2013, with Trevor Noah. Chieng was offered the Daily
Show's correspondent job two years later. Chieng was named one of the 10 most
watched comics in Variety's July 2016 issue. In October, Chieng joined The
Daily Show to discuss a Jesse Watters Fox News segment which was widely
believed to be racist. Chieng airs expletive-laden critique of the segment on
the conservative network. Chieng also visited the city's Chinatown, where
Watters had mocked residents, and conducted interviews more respectfully with
residents in Mandarin and Cantonese. The viral video was featured in Slate and
Washington Post. In his childhood, Chieng was an Singapore Sea Scout. Chieng
hasn't been able to acquire citizenship or permanent residency status in
Australia despite having lived in Australia for ten years. In 2018, Chieng
admitted that he was cynophobic on the Daily Show however, he later clarified
in an interview that Chieng was "100 percent not afraid of dogs".
